Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that can vary drastically in severity. ASD can impact the way a person communicates, learns, and interacts with others. There is not just one type of autism. Instead, there are different subtypes. These subtypes occur because of a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because ASD is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has different strengths and challenges on this wide spectrum. 

Autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that can vary drastically in severity. ASD can impact the way a person communicates, learns, and interacts with others. Currently, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that autism affects an estimated 1 in 44 children in the United States today. There is not just one type of autism. Instead, there are different subtypes. These subtypes occur because of a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because ASD is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has different strengths and challenges on this wide spectrum. 

So what does autism look like? Typically, individuals will have difficulties with social interactions, communication & language, sensory sensitivities, play skills, and rigid or repetitive behaviors.

The signs of autism typically appear by age 2 or 3. There are some developmental delays that can appear even earlier. These can be diagnosed as early as 18 months.

Some common signs of autism include:

  • Avoiding eye contact.
  • Difficulty recognizing emotions of self and of others.
  • Little interest in social interactions.
  • Repetitive behaviors
  • Obsessive interests
  • Delayed speech or language skills
